LIFE 2023: Nurturing Knowledge Through Game-Based Learning

 NURTURING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH EDUTAINMENT

In a vibrant celebration of educational progress, SMU's Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) recently hosted its annual Learning Innovation Festival (LIFE) on October 6, 2023. This year marked a significant milestone as LIFE 2023 became the most memorable in-person event since its inception in 2019. Collaborating with the ASEAN University Network Technology Enhanced Personalized Learning (AUN TEPL) Thematic Network, the event witnessed the participation of over 150 attendees from 10 countries. The theme of the occasion was "More Than Just Fun - Elevating Teaching and Learning through Game-Based Learning."

The day was dedicated to exploring the power of games to captivate, inspire, and educate. "Games are ideal for preparing students for a world that demands adaptability, critical thinking, and collaboration. Let's delve into the world of educational games together. Hopefully, today's event motivates you to incorporate a game in your teaching, or perhaps create an educational game yourself," stated Dean Lieven Demeester, Director of CTE and Associate Provost (Teaching and Learning Innovation) at SMU, inaugurating the event.

From solving puzzles in immersive physical escape rooms to witnessing natural selection unfold through the journey of adorable ducks, LIFE 2023 showcased how game-based learning seamlessly blends education and entertainment. Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn how educators were employing gaming technology to engage students, enhance critical thinking, and promote collaborative learning. By harnessing the inherent motivational aspects of games, this educational approach empowers individuals to acquire knowledge and skills through interactive gameplay, problem-solving challenges, and immersive storytelling.

During the enriching and experiential half-day event, attendees gained firsthand insights into the game-based learning programs implemented at SMU. These projects, relevant to students of all ages, aim to provide a dynamic and engaging platform for growth, including:

1. Founders of the North:

A multiplayer adventure where students collaboratively build towering structures on a dynamic floating island, honing skills in strategic decision-making and risk management.

2. Dawn of the Duck Evolution Game:

A fascinating journey led by Professor Norman Li, guiding students through the evolutionary exploration of natural selection and variation using charming ducks.

3. Escape Room Game:

Groups of students raced against the clock, solving intricate puzzles within a vivid physical room replicating a Pharaoh's tomb, enhancing team-building and people management skills.

4. Hotel or Out Yield Management Simulation:

Students assumed the role of hotel managers, optimizing bookings to avoid vacancies and overbookings, strengthening decision-making abilities.

5. iDecision Games:

Through real-time discussions and diverse roles, students learned negotiation, teamwork, and critical thinking skills, aiming for mutually beneficial outcomes between parties.

6. SMU Challenge:

A mobile game testing students' knowledge of accounting and law of torts, encouraging quick thinking and reinforcing subject knowledge.

7. In addition to presentations by invited professors who successfully implemented game-based learning, LIFE 2023 featured sharing sessions by SMU's Center for Management Practice on the creation of Cases and Teaching Notes for Game-Based Learning projects, as well as SMU's Integrated Information Technology Services team, shedding light on the implementation of these initiatives in classrooms.

Emphasizing the interactive nature of the discussions, attendees present at LIFE 2023 were invited to booth meetings where they witnessed the design and execution of the games. Engaging with lead educators, they discussed how these games stimulated learning and acquired strategies to integrate similar innovations into their classrooms.

In essence, LIFE 2023 not only highlighted the transformative power of game-based learning but also inspired educators to embrace these innovative techniques, fostering a dynamic and engaging educational environment. As we step into this new era of interactive learning, the integration of games into education promises a future where knowledge acquisition is not just educational but also incredibly fun. Here's to a future where learning is an adventure, and classrooms are vibrant spaces of discovery and joy.
